Tunisian blue

Writers Colette and Simone de Beauvoir were inspired by the village of Sidi Bou Said in northern Tunisia. (From: Photos: Beautiful Villages Around the World)

Tunisia has much to offer the traveler: impressive Roman remains, wonderful museums, fine Islamic architecture, vast sandy beaches, and dramatic landscapes.

Blue paint is used extensively throughout Tunisia as it is thought to help repel insects.  It also creates a wonderful blue and white colourscape as seen in the northern town of Sidi Bou Said. The town is located on top of a steep cliff, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. The view from Sidi Bou Said is amazing. The  town is simply beautiful, with flowers draped from almost every wall and doorway.  The cuisine, although similar to Moroccan cooking is more highly spiced with Harissa used extensively. Chilli, tomatoes, tuna, eggs, olives and offal based dished are also prominent ingredients in the Tunisian diet.

In Perth, Cooking Passions Cooking School run by Nico Morretti offers a  cooking class in North African cuisine.  If your taste buds are tempted, check out his class schedule with the above link.
